Human Grade Dog Food?
Uncovering the TRUTH about dog food labeling
Here's all you need to know about Human Grade Dog Food, and how you can avoid getting scammed by a dog food label.
A quick scan of the pet food shelves, and you can easily see that there are some pet food manufacturers who do print up dog food labels for their products that are confusing and often misleading.
It's not so simple to just bring us home any dog food that happens to drop in your shopping cart now days. Do you think we've been misled?
It's not rocket science to know that we need basic nutrients to stay out of the Vet's office. And here's a quick plan to know that you are choosing wisely.
Compare Dog Foods and Dog Food Labeling
In my experience, many people do not realize that "human grade dog food" does not really exist - no matter what the dog food label reads.
Human grade food is, well, human grade food - the same food you would buy fresh from your local grocer intended to feed you and your family. (OK, and hopefully us doggies, too!)
Bottom line is that if you find a dog food that is labeled "human grade," this is a dog gone false statement. This is because any product that suggests that it may be Human grade food must bear the stamp of approval from the USDA.
I know you are a responsible pet owner, and you really do want to feed us the best possible food you can. If you can't feed us your own home coking, it's best to compare dog foods, and dog food labels - us dogs are relying on you for our health and happiness.
Please don't be taken in by human grade dog food labels... save your money and bring us home some raw meaty bones (big dog smiles here).
Common Scams Found On Dog Food Labels
Let's take dog food labels a bit further, you may be interested to know that labels that read "holistic," or possibly "natural" can be quite misleading as well.
The use of holistic or natural - or maybe holistically natural? - are mere marketing decoys to persuade you into believing that those particular dog foods are in some way healthier dog foods.
Actually, there is no legal definition of either "holistic dog food" or "natural dog food" in the realm of commercial dog food.
If your goal is to serve your dog a natural, holistic dog food diet, your only true option is to make your own homemade dog food. You can find the Top 10 Healthy Homemade Dog Food Recipes right here.
According to the AAFCO, Human grade food is not always the best for your dog - Human grade food for dogs may contain foods that are harmful for your pet.
From our authority site, AAFCO (Association of American Feed Control Officials) we read this actual question that was asked from a dog food manufacturer about human grade dog food…
"I use ingredients from the grocery store in my pet food manufacturing plant; I want to tell customers that my product is human grade. Can I do that on the label?"
AAFCO tells us that any claims on animal foods should not be false or misleading. A claim that something is "human-grade" or "human-quality" implies that the article being referred to is "edible" for people in legally defined terms.
Both of the terms "human grade" and "human quality" have no legal definition. When one or more human edible ingredients are mixed with one or more non-human edible ingredients, the edible ingredients become non-human edible. It's really that simple.
To claim that a product composed of USDA inspected and passed chicken, plus poultry meal (which is not human edible) and other ingredients that are made with human-grade chicken is simply misleading, without additional qualification and disclaimers in the claim... because the chicken is no longer edible for human consumption.
Thus, for all practical purposes, the term "human grade" represents the product to be human edible.
For a product to be human edible, all ingredients in the product must be fit for humans - and the product must be manufactured, packed and held in accordance with federal regulations in 21 CFR 110, Current Good Manufacturing Practice in Manufacturing, Packing, or Holding Human Food.
Whew... that's a lot to check on!
It's important to know that only if these conditions are met, then human-grade claims may be made. If these conditions do not exist, then making an unqualified claim about ingredients being human grade misbrands the product. "
